COPPELIA
Saturday was the Central Oregon School of Ballet's performance of 'Coppelia'. It is totally amazing to Dan & me what those teachers can accomplish with a bunch of young people. The costumes, the set, and the dancing was just super! I'm not prejudiced or anything ;)
We were a bit worried about the heat - and it was another day in the 90's but no one on stage fainted and the audience had programs to fan themselves with so all was well in the end. Nothing a little DQ ice cream couldn't fix after the show!
Amy's friend, Miriam, was able to attend with us.
Now we have some time off from 3 ballet classes a week. September will come all too fast!

Charlie Rides the Rapids
Well, I couldn't resist trying to get a video of Charlie and his favorite summer activity. The first clip is probably too long and you really lose sight of him pretty quickly but the second is a bit better, but short.
I'm definitely not a videographer, but I tried... Of course, filming into the sun doesn't help!
For those of you who know & love Charlie this maybe worth a look!

Palm Springs
Last week I flew to Lost Vegas and then drove to Palm Springs to help Dan with the job search. On the way I let the GPS dictate the route and it was pretty interesting - think desolate, very hot and not much else! It was between 105 and 110 every day in Palm Springs, which really isn't that bad because the humidity was only around 5%. However, a pool still feels really good in the hot weather; here is a shot of Dan at the pool behind his Mom's house.
Here he is from another angle; had to get some mountains in the background.
We ate at a restaurant one day and I thought the waiter summed up the weather situation there very well. He said that it is okay up to around 110 degrees, but when it gets to something like 115 to 120 degrees that is just too hot.
I drove back to Las Vegas using a different route. Just to the west of Palm Springs are a whole bunch of wind turbines, as shown in the picture (don't expect too much - I was driving!) below.
About 3 and a half hours later and after passing just south of Death Valley, I hit the Nevada state line, which is on the horizon in the picture below. You'll never guess what was on the Nevada
side of the border. Yes, a great big casino. When I got to my casino hotel in Lost Vegas, I desperately wanted to gamble away the 6 quarters I had in my pocket, but I couldn't quite figure out how to do it. In the good old days, slot machines would gladly "eat" quarters, but now the machines only accept paper money or coupons, whatever they are. So I didn't hit it big!

Tumalo Mountain Hike
Dan & I got up on Friday and decided to hike a mountain. Now, this is called a mountain but it is not one of the 'real' mountains around here. It was definitely doable by me... which means it would be doable by most of you reading this. Really!
Shortly after starting out on the trail we ran into patches of snow which were fun to encounter on a hot summer day. It took a little over an hour to get to the top and the views were every bit worth my minor struggles.
Here I am just getting to the top... Mt. Bachelor is behind me.
Dan on the snow field.
Here's a guy who hiked up the trail with all of his ski gear strapped to his back with the goal of skiing down the backside of the mountain. He said it took about 30 seconds to ski down and 1/2 an hour to get back up for another go...looked like great fun for the more adventurous spirit!
Here he is taking off!
There were white flowers scattered all over the top of the mountain. Very pretty!
Here's a picture taken from our neighborhood to show where we were. The bigger mountain on the left is Mt. Bachelor where the local ski area is and Tumalo is the little snow covered 'hill' to the right.
We were home by lunchtime and spent the afternoon floating down the river with friends and then had a BBQ at their house. It was a great day!
